Fodor’s Travel: Cannon Beach a Global Standout Destination

Winter Sunset in Cannon Beach

Winter Sunset in Cannon Beach

Fodor’s released its  2024 “Travel Go”  list of the top 24 best travel destinations across the globe.  Cannon Beach was one of only two places in the United States included.

For over 80 years, Fodor’s Travel has established itself as the trusted resource for expert travel advice.

So for Cannon Beach to make the list of the top 24 best travel destinations across the globe is pretty impressive.  The only other domestic location on the list was Boulder Colorado.     Other travel destinations on the list included international locations like Bergen Norway, Queensland, New Zealand, Puerto Escondido, Mexico, and Rouen, France.

Why it’s Wonderful

With moody weather, dramatic coastlines, and diverse flora and fauna, it’s no wonder people fall in love with Cannon Beach.  Writer Kay Kingsman penned, “If Michelangelo, Toni Morrison, and H.E.R all collaborated to come up with a single destination, the creation would be Cannon Beach.” She notes that the seaside town,   Cannon Beach is structured around its abundant natural beauty.

Both indoor and outdoor highlights demonstrate that Cannon Beach appeals to just about everyone.  And the time of year depends on the experience you want.  Visitors can enjoy lively summers, storm-watching in winter,  or the mild shoulder seasons in between.

Outdoors, Cannon Beach attractions include wide inviting beaches, colossal Haystack Rock, its colorful tidepools, and the majestic views of hiking trails from nearby Ecola State Park. Indoors, visitors to Cannon Beach can take in notable art galleries,  unique boutiques,  farm fresh/boat-to-table dining, and inviting pubs.

Why Tolovana Is The Ideal Resort

No matter when you visit Cannon Beach, Tolovana Inn’s oceanfront rooms and suites are the perfect place to stay.  You’ll be steps to the sand.  You’ll stay cozy enjoying a warm fire and endless views from your private beachfront balcony.

Giving gift cards to Cannon Beach is a double treat.  One, when your recipient opens your thoughtful gift.  And, secondly when they redeem the card for a memorable stay at one of Oregon’s favorite beachfront resorts!

5 Things to Do on a Cannon Beach Winter Getaway

  1. All aboard the Candy Cane Express. The one-hour ride on the Oregon Coast Scenic Railroad departs from Garibaldi and runs to Rockaway Beach. Enjoy hot chocolate and cookies while taking in the Oregon coastline from the warmth of the festive train.
  2. Check out all the fun that fun that makes up Haystack Holidays. Watch a holiday classic come to life at the Coaster Theatre Playhouse or learn how to make wreaths at the Chamber Community Hall.
  3. While winter weather in Cannon Beach doesn’t mean falling snow, there is a heightened chance of precipitation. The conditions during this time of year are perfect for enjoying a bit of storm-watching. Our top choice is Ecola State Park, but make sure you follow safety tips.
  4. There are two main whale-watching seasons in Cannon Beach, and one takes place from mid-December to mid-January. This is when whales migrate to warmer waters. Throughout the season, Oregon State Parks coordinates programs throughout the region to teach visitors about these creatures.
  5. Without the crowds of summer, some of Cannon Beach’s other residents make their presence known. The herds of Roosevelt Elk that live here can be spotted most of the year at several places throughout town, including Ecola State Park and City Park.

Gift Card

Tolovana Inn Gift Cards are a welcome gift idea.

Holiday gift-giving presents a delicate balance.  Above all, you want to give something that feels special for your giftee, without giving them something they already have.

Likewise, you also must factor in the expense. When buying gifts, you want to spend hard-earned money on something that will be appreciated.

Holiday gift lists often suggest luxury items or new tech “must-haves.”   As alluring as they may sound, those gifts frequently fall short of leaving a lasting impression. And, isn’t that the goal of a good gift?

The Solution: A Gift of Experience

Increasingly, gifts of experiences are becoming more popular. That’s because they keep on giving, providing memories that last.

With that in mind, we suggest you consider giving cards to Tolovana Inn on the Oregon coast.

Tolovana Inn gift cards are great for holiday giving because they are:

  • ideal for family members, clients, or even a special someone.
  • certain to be considered exceptionally thoughtful.
  • easy to redeem throughout the year.

Who wouldn’t want to stay in a special ocean-view suite with a private beachfront balcony, cozy fireplace, and full kitchen?  Just steps to the beach and Haystack Rock, guests can stroll along wide shores.  Or, relax indoors listening to the rolling sound of the Pacific Ocean.  With pet-friendly rooms, guests can also bring their furbabies along for the fun. Amenities on-site include a sparkling indoor saltwater pool, spa, and fitness center.

There’s so much to do, all just a 90-minute drive from Portland.  Cannon Beach’s distinctive shops, galleries, and boutiques are always inviting.   Year-round, guests can enjoy art festivals and special events. Nearby, beautiful coastal parks provide easy access to scenic hiking trails.

Tufted Puffins Sculpture

Tuffed Puffins Sculpture in Cannon Beach

It only takes a walk around charming Cannon Beach to understand why this special village is known as one of America’s 100 Top Art Towns.

Review a gallery walking route that will guide you to the top galleries, featuring works by nationally known artists, top emerging Northwest talent, and even a working glass-blowing studio.

However, you can also explore some of the wonderful public art that certainly underscores the town’s reputation.   You can download a map of the 1.5 walk that starts at the corner of Spruce and 2nd streets.

Seven Notable Art Installations and More

You can visit seven notable installations along the public art walk route. Several other fountains, sculptures, and murals are visible too.  As a matter of fact, many architectural details and colorful flowers make the walk even more visually enjoyable.

North End

Begin starting near public parking and a rest area at the north end of town.

  • The Wave  This stainless-steel installation depicts a modern interpretation of rolling waves. Created by Sharon Warman Agnor,  you’ll see the Wave at the start of the walking tour.    Additionally,  you can also take note of architectural details at the town’s information center.  Look up to see an osprey nest, jellyfish lamps and downspouts that pay homage to Native American art.
  • Whale Ribs Weather-rusted metal ribs with circular glass insets represent Whale Ribs.   Nick Thomas Design Studio created this creative installation. You’ll see it lining the sidewalk one block north, in front of a small public parking lot at 3rd Street.
  • Welcome Pole   Afterward, head to the north and walk along the Bark Trail at the edge of Ecola Creek.  There,  experience a wooden sculpture inspired by the original Clatsop-Nehalem tribe that lived there in a village called NeCus when   Lewis and Clark’s Corps of Discovery passed this way in 1806.  Native American artist Guy Capoeman created the work.

Along the Beachfront

  • Whale Sculpture is located in a small park at the end of town. This sleek bronze sculpture commemorates a visit to the area by Lewis and Clark where they reportedly encountered a washed-ashore whale. You’ll see it in a plaza area not far from Bruce’s Candy Kitchen.

Center of Town

  • Delicate Balance is undoubtedly charming.  This whimsical and colorful sculpture features curiously stacked chickens and eggs.  Created by sculptor Wayne Chabre, you can experience it resting across the street from the Coaster Theatre.

Midtown

  • Tufted Puffins celebrates the beloved seabirds that return to Haystack Rock each spring. Northwest sculptor Georgia Gerber created the charming installation. You’ll find it at the corner of Gower and Hemlook.
  • Contact represents two figures reaching toward each other.  In fact, the sculpture is a cut steel bright orange bench. Lastly, you can see it a block south and west of Tufted Puffins.

Surf Fishing

Be close to all the adventure by staying at Tolovana Inn. Our oceanfront resort is the perfect home base for everyone, from families to couples. What Gear Do You Need?

In order to have the best chances of reeling in the catch of the day, you need the right equipment. You need fishing gear that can handle being cast into the heavy surf. This includes things like:

  • A nine to 11-foot rod which can hold a weight between two and six ounces
  • Spare spool of line
  • A bait bucket filled with popular bait like clam necks, sand shrimp, or mole crabs

You will also need to purchase a general Oregon Angling license

The Best Places to Fish

Casting your line for surfperch is something that can be enjoyed year-round. When looking for where to set up camp, you want to look for places with shallow areas and deeper holes. This includes looking for rocky areas in the sand, sloped beaches, and jetties. We recommend heading out during low tides as the conditions make spotting these areas easier. To avoid crowds, we also recommend setting your alarm early so you can snag an excellent section of shoreline.
