Tuffed Puffins Sculpture in Cannon Beach

It only takes a walk around charming Cannon Beach to understand why this special village is known as one of America’s 100 Top Art Towns.

Review a gallery walking route that will guide you to the top galleries, featuring works by nationally known artists, top emerging Northwest talent, and even a working glass-blowing studio.

However, you can also explore some of the wonderful public art that certainly underscores the town’s reputation.   You can download a map of the 1.5 walk that starts at the corner of Spruce and 2nd streets.

Seven Notable Art Installations and More

You can visit seven notable installations along the public art walk route. Several other fountains, sculptures, and murals are visible too.  As a matter of fact, many architectural details and colorful flowers make the walk even more visually enjoyable.

North End

Begin starting near public parking and a rest area at the north end of town.

  • The Wave  This stainless-steel installation depicts a modern interpretation of rolling waves. Created by Sharon Warman Agnor,  you’ll see the Wave at the start of the walking tour.    Additionally,  you can also take note of architectural details at the town’s information center.  Look up to see an osprey nest, jellyfish lamps and downspouts that pay homage to Native American art.
  • Whale Ribs Weather-rusted metal ribs with circular glass insets represent Whale Ribs.   Nick Thomas Design Studio created this creative installation. You’ll see it lining the sidewalk one block north, in front of a small public parking lot at 3rd Street.
  • Welcome Pole   Afterward, head to the north and walk along the Bark Trail at the edge of Ecola Creek.  There,  experience a wooden sculpture inspired by the original Clatsop-Nehalem tribe that lived there in a village called NeCus when   Lewis and Clark’s Corps of Discovery passed this way in 1806.  Native American artist Guy Capoeman created the work.

Along the Beachfront

  • Whale Sculpture is located in a small park at the end of town. This sleek bronze sculpture commemorates a visit to the area by Lewis and Clark where they reportedly encountered a washed-ashore whale. You’ll see it in a plaza area not far from Bruce’s Candy Kitchen.

Center of Town

  • Delicate Balance is undoubtedly charming.  This whimsical and colorful sculpture features curiously stacked chickens and eggs.  Created by sculptor Wayne Chabre, you can experience it resting across the street from the Coaster Theatre.

Midtown

  • Tufted Puffins celebrates the beloved seabirds that return to Haystack Rock each spring. Northwest sculptor Georgia Gerber created the charming installation. You’ll find it at the corner of Gower and Hemlook.
  • Contact represents two figures reaching toward each other.  In fact, the sculpture is a cut steel bright orange bench. Lastly, you can see it a block south and west of Tufted Puffins.

What Gear Do You Need?

In order to have the best chances of reeling in the catch of the day, you need the right equipment. You need fishing gear that can handle being cast into the heavy surf. This includes things like:

  • A nine to 11-foot rod which can hold a weight between two and six ounces
  • Spare spool of line
  • A bait bucket filled with popular bait like clam necks, sand shrimp, or mole crabs

You will also need to purchase a general Oregon Angling license

The Best Places to Fish

Casting your line for surfperch is something that can be enjoyed year-round. When looking for where to set up camp, you want to look for places with shallow areas and deeper holes. This includes looking for rocky areas in the sand, sloped beaches, and jetties. We recommend heading out during low tides as the conditions make spotting these areas easier. To avoid crowds, we also recommend setting your alarm early so you can snag an excellent section of shoreline.

Tillamook Lighthouse for Sale!

The Tillamook Lighthouse, built on an acre basalt rock The landmark Tillamook Lighthouse is up for sale.

Built a little over a mile offshore from Ecola State Park in Cannon Beach, the lighthouse offers a unique history and faces an uncertain future.

Also known as “Terrible Tilly,” it is Oregon’s only offshore lighthouse.  Rising 133 feet about the whipping waters of the Pacific Ocean, Terribly Tilly is easy to spot but difficult to reach.

Tilly’s History

Situated on less than an acre of basalt rock in the Pacific Ocean, it was built in 1881 to guide ships along the ocean and to the Columbia River.  Constructing the lighthouse was grueling.  Accessing the rock was dangerous.  Unpredictable and stormy weather wreaked havoc on the crew,  supplies, and morale.   Not surprisingly, at more than $123,000–and over 500 days–its construction costs made it the most expensive lighthouse built in that era.

After manning it for 77 years, the U.S. Lighthouse Service turned it over to the U.S. Coast Guard in 1939.   But by 1957, it was decommissioned.  At that time,  it was listed on the National Registrary of Historic Places.   Eventually, it was put up for sale and Las Vegas investors bought it sight unseen two years later for $5,600 at an auction.

The site changed hands a few more times until the current investors/owners purchased it in 1980.  They established the Eternity-at-Sea Columbarium—a place where 30 funeral urns currently rest.

New Owners Sought

Now its current owners are interested in selling the unique site/Ideally, a new owner would expand the Columbarium business.  The current asking price for the site is $6.5 million.

Recently a team of five people was helicoptered out to the rock where they camped out for three days. Their job was to clean up the stone building to get it ready for sale. They also collected relics that could be used to raise funds for more maintenance work.   While the site needs paint and more cleanup, the structure stands firm.

The private Tillamook Rock property is part of the Oregon Islands National Wildlife Refuge, It  can only be reached by helicopter–and with the owners’ permission. Access also depends on the weather and if sea lions aren’t overcrowding the landing site.

The last lighthouse keeper to leave the island post wrote lyrically about Terrible Tilly in the official logbook   He said that the Tillamook Lighthouse was   “one of the most notorious and yet “fascinating of the sea-swept sentinels in the world.”

He stated that its “beacon has been a star of hope” and its foghorn “a voice of encouragement” through “howling gale, thick fog and driving rain.”

You can read more about it here.

So when you are ready to plan your next stay at Tolovana Inn, be sure to take a few moments to watch the waves pound the rocks around “Terrible Tilly.”

Call 503-436-2211 to learn more about reserving your stay or our on-site amenities.
