You can get a glimpse of coastal living in Cannon Beach, Oregon at the annual Cottage & Garden Tour, September 7-9.

Historic inns, vintage homes, and special gardens will welcome guests to enjoy a weekend of special receptions, presentations, concerts, a garden tea, wine tastings, and even a costume contest.

The annual event is coordinated by the Cannon Beach History Center & Museum which celebrates the town’s heritage as a coastal destination community.

Two of the weekend special events are hosted at the Tolovana Inn.

Cannon Beach has been a destination community since the 1880’s.  In fact, in an August 1891 issue of The Daily Astorian newspaper, Cannon Beach was declared a “sportsman’s paradise.”  Additionally, it was heralded as an “ideal location for rest and recuperation.” Still true!

Cannon Beach has emerged into a picture-perfect destination of unmatched charm.  And during this special weekend,  you can experience it in an extraordinary way.

Bill Sullivan, Oregon author

The tour kicks off at noon, Saturday, starting at Tolovana Inn, with a riveting presentation by Oregon author William (Bill) Sullivan. Sullivan is a fifth-generation Oregonian and a prolific writer, adventurer, hiker, and historian.  His award-winning books delve into Oregon’s legendary, unknown, and often strange past. His talk will focus on the history of Cannon Beach and the trails and roads used to access them – and some history about  Governor Oswald West. West was governor from 1911 – 1913 and due to his efforts, is one of the major reasons that our beaches are open to the public.  Tour maps will be distributed there.

Friday, September 7  Opening Concert and Reception: 6 pm 

The R.J. Marx Quartet features a world-class frontline of saxophone and guitar exploring some of the most challenging and rarely performed compositions of the major jazz composers from the ’40s -’70s, as well as traditional favorites.  Tickets to this event are $15.

Saturday, September 8 Luncheon & Lecture: Noon-1pm
Keynote speaker Bill Sullivan. The luncheon will be prepared by the notable bakers, chefs and sommeliers of Dough Dough Bakery, of Seaside.  Held at the Tolovana Inn, tickets for the luncheon and lecture are $25. Attendees to this event will receive the home tour map at the luncheon.

Home & Garden Tour: Noon-5pm
Highlight include ten vintage homes, beach dream homes and well-tended gardens of mid-town Cannon Beach. Tickets for the self-guided tour are $35 and include the Saturday night jazz concert.

Jazz Concert & Reception: 6pm
After the tour, the festivities continue with the 1920’s themed concert and reception at the Cannon Beach History Center & Museum. Admission is free with your tour map. Additional tickets can be purchased at the door for $15.  Don’t miss out on the 1920’s themed costume contest, tasty treats, wine, a raffle, a photo booth, and dancing.

Sunday, September 9     Garden Tea: 11 am at Tolovana Inn
The final event of the weekend is an English style garden tea at Tolovana Inn. Enjoy tea, scones, cucumber sandwiches and other tasty morsels from Dough Dough Bakery.  Nationally recognized garden designer and writer, Lucy Hardiman will speak at this showcase event. She is the owner and principal of the award-winning Perennial Partners, a collaborative garden design group in Portland, Oregon. Tickets to this event are $20.

Proceeds benefit the Cannon Beach History Center and Museum, a non-profit organization.

Fresh Food & Flowers Tuesdays at CB Farmer’s Market

280237image235On Tuesdays, now through September 27, guests and residents of Cannon Beach can shop in the afternoons at the Farmer’s Market.

Music and prepared food booths open starting at 1pm.  All other vendors are up and selling by 2pm, offering a wide variety of fresh produce, pasture-raised meat, organic cheeses, and hand-crafted artisan foods.   Fresh flowers are also available at the Tuesday afternoon market, which winds up each day at 5pm.

The Cannon Beach Farmers Market is located adjacent to  Cannon Beach City Hall, in the Midtown parking area at the intersection of Gower and Hemlock  It is about a 15-20 minute walk north from the inviting, ocean front rooms at the Tolovana Inn.

 

 

Winter Dungeness Crab: Fresh and Tasty in Cannon Beach

6601777601_c138e3458f_b crabDungeness crabbing is underway and Cannon Beach’s Ecola Seafood opens tomorrow, January 14, offering fresh-caught Oregon Dungeness along with other local seafood.

With beach-front suites featuring complete kitchens, Tolovana Inn is a perfect place to stay when you want to prepare and enjoy a local seafood feast while enjoying incredible ocean views.

Sweet, delicate and tasty Oregon Dungessess crab is a winter culinary treat that is both versatile and easy to prepare.  It’s in season now, through April.  It can be served simply, or elegantly, equally at home on newspaper or china. It’s easy to prepare, too!

Cooked crab can be served chilled or heated in a steamer, broiler or oven for 4-5 minutes. As a featured ingredient in a hot entrée, Dungeness crab meat goes well with pasta, in casseroles and in seafood-based soups.

Served chilled, it’s ideal in a Crab Louis or cocktail-style.  Fresh crab is a delicious appetizer, served with a warm melted butter or a tasty dipping sauce, like a blend of mayo and siracha.

To cook a live crab, simply place it in boiling salted water and cook for 18-20 minutes–after the water returns to a boil.   The shell will turn a bright orange.  Then, immerse the crab in cold water to cool it before cleaning, removing the gills and viscera before serving. Check with your purveyor if you have questions.

Accompanied by an Oregon wine or an ale, fresh Dungeness is just one of the many blessings of the bounty of Oregon.

Ecola Seafoods, located at 2nd and Spruce, in Cannon Beach is open daily from 10am to 6pm.

Oregon Dungeness crab generates more than $50 million annually.  About 300 commercial crabbing boats dot the Oregon coast each winter.

Tickets for the September 12-13 Cannon Beach Cottage & Garden Tour are now available for purchase.

The two day event, now in its 12th year, is a major fundraiser for the Cannon Beach History Center & Museum, and provides participants an opportunity to visit unique coastal homes and private art collections.

The tour will begin Saturday, Sept. 12, at noon, at the Tolovana Inn, with a luncheon prepared by Culinary Capers, followed by a round-table discussion moderated by CBHCM board president, Kimberley Speer-Miller, who will provide the unique history of Cannon Beach.   Equipped with a new perspective, attendees will start the self-guided tour.

The Saturday tour begins at 1:00 pm and will conclude with a fun reception at the Cannon Beach History Center and Museum including wine, live music and appetizers and a raffle.

On Sunday, Tolovana Inn will be the site of a wrap-up event, an English-style, Garden Tea Party.  Guests will enjoy Oregon-made teas, homemade scones and treats in a flower-filled setting.   The event will be highlighted by a presentations from Debbie Teashon, owner of the Rainy Side Gardener and writer.   Her topic will be “Life Beyond the Two-Season Garden.   She is the co-author of Gardening for the Home Brewer: Plants for Making Beer, Wine, Gruit, Cider, Perry, and More.

Tickets for each event are available to purchase separately. Luncheon and lecture tickets are $25; Cottage & Garden Tour tickets are $30, and Garden Tea tickets, $20.  A weekend event package is $60.
