The 5 Best Oregon Coast Hikes near Cannon Beach

  1. When hiking the 2.8-mile Clatsop Loop Trail from Indian Beach, you can choose to walk the path from either direction. While this path is wide, it has an even but steep grade.
  2. Take in views of Haystack Rock on a 4.3-mile out and back trail. It generally takes just over an hour to make your way along this path, which is also a popular birding spot.
  3. The .6-mile Tillamook Rock Lighthouse Loop is an excellent option for those visiting with young children. This is a popular trail and only takes about 15 minutes to finish.
  4. Head to Oswald West State Park to hike the Cape Falcon Trail. The 4.6-mile out and back trail near Nehalem takes you through old-growth rainforests.
  5. Another option inside this park is the Neahkahnie Mountain view South Trailhead. The effort to hike the 3.9-mile trail is worth it as you take in panoramic coastline views.

Garibaldi Charters is located on the waterfront in the seaside town  Garibaldi, about 40 minutes south of Cannon Beach.  Groups or individuals can book deep sea fishing trips for halibut, lingcod, salmon, or tuna. Depending on the seasons, you can book crabbing or clamming adventures.  With four vessels, each led by seasoned captains and experienced deckhands, you’ll find the right trip and probably bring home something fresh for dinner, too.

Fireworks typically highlight most 4th of July celebrations. But in Cannon Beach, new traditions are replacing sparklers in the front yard or rockets launched over the ocean.

That is because the Cannon Beach city council voted in 2020 to make the town Fire-Works Free. It’s proven to be a well-embraced decision

The restriction was prompted by a growing public concern about the well-being of local wildlife and fire danger.

A Delicate Ecosystem

Cannon Beach exists in the heart of a delicate and well-loved ecosystem. The special natural environment is treasured. The community lies along the magnificent ocean surrounded by pristine tidepools and soaring seabirds. Adjacent to the beach stand coastal forests filled with herds of local elk.   All that wonder of the natural world can be easily disrupted by booming noise and flashing fireworks. And, impacted by inevitable trash that lingers long after firework displays are forgotten.

Released in 1985, The Goonies follows a group of kids who find an ancient map and the adventures on their journey to find the long-lost treasure. A majority of the filming took place in Astoria and Cannon Beach, which means you can see these classic movie locations in real life.

  • One of the most well-known attractions is Mikey’s house. This spot is a private residence, so be respectful of the owners’ wishes when visiting and do not drive up the driveway. There is no street parking near the house, so you’ll need to park a few blocks away and walk to get your photo.
  • Another popular attraction is the County Jail on Duane Street. Today, the old jail is the Oregon Film Museum and showcases television and films produced or filmed in Oregon.
  • Go on a self-guided tour of the Flavel House Museum, where Mikey’s dad worked as a curator, and the kids biked past in on their treasure hunt.
  • Several scenes featuring the Oregon coast were filmed at Ecola State Park. This park is where the movie’s villains had their hideout and the start of the kids’ treasure hunt. The actual hideout was built for the film and then taken down, but you can see a small building where the hideout once stood.
  • One of the most recognizable attractions in Cannon Beach also makes an appearance in the movie. The kids use Haystack Rock to navigate the map, and a trip to Cannon Beach isn’t complete without stopping by to get a photo of this well-known landmark.
