When creating your itinerary of memorable adventures, checking out local state parks is a must. It only takes about 15 minutes to drive from our Cannon Beach hotel to this breathtaking state park. Whether you’re vacationing with kids or just the two of you, this Oregon park is a favorite amongst visitors of all ages.

  • One of the biggest things that draw people to the park is the stunning hiking trails. Make your way along the .6-mile Tillamook Rock Lighthouse Loop for an easy hike. Other popular paths include the Clatsop Loop Trail and Indian Beach Trail.
  • Take in the stunning views found all over the park. The entrance itself takes you through a lush Sitka spruce forest. Take photos of the sea stacks on the southern shoreline or the views from the grassy bluff.
  • Watch surfers try to catch waves from the sandy shores of Indian Beach. This secluded area is also an excellent spot for tidepooling and beach combing.
  • If you find yourself visiting in the winter or spring, be sure to head to the park to enjoy a bit of whale watching. Gray whales start their winter migration in mid-December and will begin traveling north again in late March. Some whales stay in Oregon’s waters year-round.
  • Whales are just one animal you can spot from Ecola State Park. The grounds are also home to other animals like deer, elk, and countless birds.

To enter the park, you must purchase a day-use parking permit.

Whether you’re planning a trip for the family or an escape for two, now is the perfect time to start creating your adventure-filled itinerary.

What to Do When Visiting Cannon Beach in the Winter

Winter is often referred to as the magic season in Oregon. Temperatures reach highs in the low 50s, with lows rarely falling below the mid-30s. While these conditions mean you’ll still want to layer up, it’s not so cold that you can’t get out and explore.

Some of the area’s top activities are best enjoyed in winter, and there are also plenty of seasonally festive events to check out.

Holiday Festivities

The holiday season is often filled with memorable gatherings, and your visit to Cannon Beach doesn’t have to be any different. If you’re visiting over Thanksgiving, get out and do some shopping on Plaid Friday. The shops found throughout town have it all, from boutiques to gift shops, so you won’t have any trouble crossing things off your list.

There are several more events that make up Haystack Holidays, including wreath-making classes, holiday concerts, and more. The event website will be updated with new information as it becomes available.

Storm Watching

One of the most popular activities for those visiting Cannon Beach in the winter is storm watching. Chances are you can watch a storm roll in from the comfort of our Oregon Coast hotel. However, another popular spot is Ecola State Park. If you decide to head outdoors, stay safe by watching out for sneaker waves and staying off rocks and jetties.

After the storm passes, head out to the sandy shoreline to go beachcombing. The wind and waves are known to unearth a treasure trove of shells and other hidden surprises.

Whale Watching

Cannon Beach is home to two fantastic whale watching seasons, and one of them is in the winter. Winter migration generally reaches peak from mid-December to mid-January. During this time, Oregon State Parks coordinate programs at several spots along the coast, including Ecola State Park, to help you spot these stunning animals.

Enjoy a Fire-Works Free Fourth in Cannon Beach

Scout

Patriotic Scout toting a flag near Haystack Rock in Cannon Beach

Fireworks typically highlight most 4th of July celebrations. But in Cannon Beach, new traditions are replacing sparklers in the front yard or rockets launched over the ocean.

That is because the Cannon Beach city council voted in 2020 to make the town Fire-Works Free. It’s proven to be a well-embraced decision

The restriction was prompted by a growing public concern about the well-being of local wildlife and fire danger.

Delicate Ecosystem

Cannon Beach exists in the heart of a delicate and well-loved ecosystem. The special natural environment is treasured. The community lies along the magnificent ocean surrounded by pristine tidepools and soaring seabirds. Adjacent to the beach stand coastal forests filled with herds of local elk.   All that wonder of the natural world can be easily disrupted by booming noise and flashing fireworks. And, impacted by inevitable trash that lingers long after firework displays are forgotten.

Wildlife cannot understand the commotion, and neither can your pets. As pet owners will tell you, dogs find the popping sounds frightening, causing them to shudder in fear. Distressed cats often run away to hide.

Even people that appreciate the traditional role of fireworks find them unsettling. People on the autism spectrum or adults who deal with PTSD struggle with the noise of traditional Independence Day celebrations.

So instead of lighting up the night sky, residents and guests of Cannon Beach have begun incorporating the tradition of building a Fourth of July bonfire on the sand. Controlled and safe, evening bonfires dot the shoreline supplying a distinctive holiday glow.

For your Cannon Beach Independence Day celebration, you can grill with family and friends. Watch a beautiful sunset and plant a flag. And of course, you can bring your dog to the beach party to celebrate.

And when you enjoy a Fireworks-Free Independence Day in Cannon Beach, you know that the local magic will remain here for years to come.

Discover The Goonies Filming Locations in Cannon Beach & Astoria

Locations in The Goonies movie are located throughout Cannon Beach and Astoria.

Whether your upcoming Cannon Beach getaway is your first or fifth time visiting this Oregon town, there is always something new to discover. Situated just south of downtown, Tolovana Inn is not only a relaxing place to call home, but it puts you near the top activities and attractions. Some of these spots might be familiar for movie fans. A fun and unique way to explore the sights of Cannon Beach and the surrounding area is by mapping out a self-guided tour of The Goonies filming locations, starting in nearby Astoria.

A Guide to Creating a Self-Guided Filming Tour

Released in 1985, The Goonies follows a group of kids who find an ancient map and the adventures on their journey to find the long-lost treasure. A majority of the filming took place in Astoria and Cannon Beach, which means you can see these classic movie locations in real life.

We recommend starting your tour by making the 40-minute drive to Astoria then working your way back to our Cannon Beach hotel.

  • One of the most well-known attractions is Mikey’s house. This spot is a private residence, so be respectful of the owners’ wishes when visiting and do not drive up the driveway. There is no street parking near the house, so you’ll need to park a few blocks away and walk to get your photo.
  • Another popular attraction is the County Jail on Duane Street. Today, the old jail is the Oregon Film Museum and showcases television and films produced or filmed in Oregon.
  • Go on a self-guided tour of the Flavel House Museum, where Mikey’s dad worked as a curator, and the kids biked past in on their treasure hunt.
  • Several scenes featuring the Oregon coast were filmed at Ecola State Park. This park is where the movie’s villains had their hideout and the start of the kids’ treasure hunt. The actual hideout was built for the film and then taken down, but you can see a small building where the hideout once stood.
  • One of the most recognizable attractions in Cannon Beach also makes an appearance in the movie. The kids use Haystack Rock to navigate the map, and a trip to Cannon Beach isn’t complete without stopping by to get a photo of this well-known landmark.
